Observing and Making Art

Art is so natural for children. They have no fear in scribbling on a blank page with crayons or filling in a picture with markers. Give them finger paint and they make a mess guaranteed to bring lots of smiles and giggles (maybe not for mom so much 😉)

We found this book, Come Look With Me, at good will a while back and have only opened it here and there to mix up the math and phonics. The kids mostly enjoy it (ages 5, 4, 2, 1) but now that the big kids stay up at nap time and have a little more focus during "school" while the house is quiet for a couple hours, we can have some longer thoughtful discussions about the works of art it presents.

Today was a work by Stuart Davis New York Waterfront.
Marlow suggested "We should paint that!  I would like to please?"

Even though painting was not next on my list, how can I refuse? Thus is the beauty of homeschooling - flexibility.

It was fascinating to see how different they produce art! Drakeford sketched shapes before he colored them in. Marlow too a more free style approach.

Then we moved on to more free-painting where Marlow got a glimpse of Drakeford's house and thought she would like one like that too. So he sketched one for her to paint 😄 "Thank you for helping me, I needed help"
